‘La Mer’ (The Sea) was written by Charle Trenet in 1943, with the melody coming to him while he was on a train in the South of France, gazing out at L’Etang de Thau lagoon. The English language version, ‘Beyond The Sea’ was made famous by Bobby Darin, complete with big band. It was great fun arranging such a well-known song as this, especially the big band solo middle section where, again, I treat the voices as Saxes and Brass in a band.
