
A few years before the 2014 Great War commemorations I developed a keen interest in the service career of my great-uncle Ralph Hancock. Thanks to the detailed investigations by the military historian Jeremy Banning, I learned that, having been wounded at The Somme, Great-Uncle Ralph was shot by a German tank taking his men over the top on 27 August 1917 as part of the Battle of Passchendaele, or Third Battle of Ypres.
