Playing in Church

I have enjoyed many years as Organist and Pianist playing for church services wherever I have lived. As a child I played at Bromyard Road Methodist Church in St. Johns, then at Selly Oak Methodist when at university. When I married and moved to Countesthorpe, Leicestershire to start at Leysland High, I played Piano for St. Andrew’s in the village and had a wonderful time led by the Pastor, Rev. Brian Davis who often played Guitar and invited all the children to play along with various percussion out of a huge crate. Quite a noise. Brian had two signs for the children… start and stop!

When I was at The Downs in Colwall, there was the morning service every week and at Beaudesert there a weekly evenng service so no rest for the wicked! Never being someone who finds it easy to say ‘No’, I helped out with the organ and piano rota (of three) at Stroud Baptist Church for the morning services.  Whilst working at The Collegiate School in Bristol I played the organ for the school services in Holy Trinity, Stapleton.

In 2018 when my wife and I bought a house in Evercreech, Somerset, we started going to St. Peter’s Church in the village. After COVID, the Choir was looking for a new Director so I asked to help and got the job. In December 2022 the Organist retired so I was both Organ and Piano in the morning Communion service, along with playing at the beautiful little Church in the Farmyard, St. James on the Farm, Milton Clevedon. For a few years I played for the outdoor 6am Easter sunrise service at St. Mary’s, Chesterblade, with the local butcher cooking sausage and bacon rolls only a few feet away - yum!

Playing in church doesn’t HAVE to be IN the building… here is a clip of me playing for the Carols round the tree in the village square… I love it - that’s what it’s all about!!!
