Although I first created a (short) version of ‘In Flanders Fields’ in 1994, this music lay dormant until 2013 when the 2014-18 Great War centenary was gathering momentum in the UK. I started in E minor with the pupils but took it down a key to D minor for the adult choirs. I love the clashing, almost violent, piano chords and especially the whispered ‘We are the Dead’ in layers so the words come from all directions. I am endebted to The Christ Church Ecumenical Choir, Dodecantus and The Thames Head Singers for their work on this piece.
