One term in the early 1990s The Downs School were invited to take part in a joint-schools concert at Wrekin College in Shropshire. Of course I said YES! I took the groups that were strong at the time: the Woodwind Group, Big Band and Rock Group. (Angus McDonald had just learned to play the opening guitar riff to ‘Money for Nothing’). ‘Okay,’ you say - nothing out of the ordinary… aahhh, but what Wrekin DIDN’T know was thatr we had a visiting pupil from Budapest who was an AMAZING singer. He was Bertolan Sugar whose dad was an Olympic Skating judge - wow!! Bert had practised a few songs, along with the Beatles’ ‘Back in the USSR.’
So the concert started… there were recorder groups and violins etc… then it was OUR turn. We had all set up BEHIND the curtain and when the curtain opened, Angus let rip with his Money for Nothing riff at full blast…. truly, the audience went wild - screaming and cheering. And that was just the first piece! The Woodwind Group were brilliant and Bert’s singing was on another planet - incredible power - wow!! Quite a day… sadly I only have one photo but here it is anyway…. any of you out there who have more, please send them in!!
